Someone asked me the other day if I would ever consider owning an electric scooter or motorcycle. It is not something I had really given that much thought. My immediate answer was ‘if it has the range I need and is well made then, yes’. I decided to have a look into the whole electric scene a bit more to see if the scooter I had in mind already existed?
There are plenty of reasons why you might want to consider an electric scooter or moped after taking your CBT. From the obvious environmental benefits to the simpler running gear it all makes sense.
I am looking here at scooters that can be ridden on a CBT, so for those of you who have to ride under speed restrictions due to age you are not going to gain anything in speed, however when i first started riding I remember that although my moped at the time was not bad on fuel, at that age there was usually something better to spend it on. With that in mind imagine having an electric moped that you never had to fork out for (I’m sure Mum & Dad would take more kindly to you plugging your moped in rather than asking them for petrol money
.
In the electric moped market there are some interesting machines such as the E-Max which has a sports moped look and the motor built into the rear wheel, it is not that distinguishable from a 50cc machine. If you don’t like the E-Max then there is the more traditional Elecscoot machines which have a 40 – 50 mile range. Not bad really, I know for me I hardly ever use a scooter for journeys longer than 15 miles.
If you are looking beyond your CBT to your bike test then there are larger maxi-scooters such as the Vetrix which is an expensive but good quality 62mph machine.
I’d love to get out and ride some of these scooters, and hopefully I will be within the coming months. I was really pleased to see just how fast the electric scooter market is growing. It makes real sense to me that for short commutes such as mine I could put out less pollution and never have to visit the petrol station again (I hate petrol stations!). Why not test one of these alongside the more traditional scooter when you come to buy one?
Oh and if you thought all electric bikes were slow then check out the video below…
What do you think about electric bikes and scooters?
